Type Locality and Naming

It was nominated by Chen Zepei et al. in 1985. The type section is located from Zhilun Village to Ganzeshan in Maogan Township, Baoting County of Hainan Province.

Synonym: (靠青山组)


Lithology and Thickness

The formation, 1101 m in thickness, is dominated by interbeds of gray, grayish black thin-bedded silty slate and slate alternating with bluish gray thin-bedded sericitic quartzose fine-grained sandstone and siltstone. There is also thin-bedded phyllite at its lower part and the top of the formation consists of gray black thin-bedded micrite.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The Kaoqinshan Fm rests conformably onto underlying Dagancun Fm

Upper contact

The Kaoqinshan Fm rests conformably below the overlying Zusailing Fm

Regional extent

The formation is steady in lithology and is mainly exposed at north Nanhao in the Sanya area.

Fossils

The micritic limestone in the upper part yields corals Syringopora cf. qianbeiensis, S. cf. yiwaensis, S. cf. nanshanensis, Syringoporella sp., Plasmopora sp., Heliolites sp., Heliolitella sp., Squameolites densus; brachiopods Atrypa sp., Striispirifer sp., S. cf. hsiehi?, Eospirifer sp., ? E. sinensis; trilobites Encrinuridae, Coronocephalus rex, and gastropod, crinoid columnal, etc.
